Zend Technologies and PHP on IBM i expert John Valance will help students build a PHP inquiry application from scratch, and at the end of the day have a working application similar to a subfile.

The class will build all the components piece by piece, including formatting the data in an HTML table: with search filters, CSS styling, pagination (to scroll through a large file), and a CSV download option.

The following topics will be covered:
    • PHP and DB2 processing with SQL
    • HTML including tables and form inputs
    • Basic CSS
    • Application architecture

The day will be very much hands-on, but John will do brief explanations of each step before moving forward.

Students are asked, if possible, to bring their laptops with Zend Studio already installed. (We can provide instructions.) John will explain how to connect to the IFS, but he doesn't want to spend time with installations during the day.

John Valance is an independent technical consultant who specializes in database and web application development on IBM i. He is also a trainer for Zend Technologies. John has been developing applications on IBM midrange systems since the 1980s and web applications since 2000 and is well-versed in a number of languages and technologies. He is a frequent presenter at IBM user groups. John grew up in New York City and currently lives in northern Vermont.

iDev Cloud

Your users group (TUG) is launching an exciting new program that could be of great benefit to our members.

  • Are you stuck on an old unsupported version of i5/OS or even OS/400 and your skills are getting dated?
  • Are you looking to be able to learn about the latest IBM i features and try out the newest capabilities?
  • Do you want to work with PHP or DBU or see what's new in Director Navigator or DB2 or SQL or Java?
  • Do you have ideas for a community application or utility that you don't have a place to develop or test? Maybe your company policies don't allow you to do this on the system at work, or you don't HAVE a system at work.

TUG is joining the iDevCloud group. There would only be a small nominal fee for TUG members to use (after a free-trial period) since TUG itself will pay the monthly subscription fee. TUG and its members will be able to:

  • Share between multiple developers
  • Get private library and storage
  • Have access to most of the IBM i development tools
  • Select i7.1…  for now and move to 8.1 as soon as available.
  • Have All compilers for IBM i tools available

The Performance is monitored by system managers with adjustments as needed. The system is accessible at anytime from anywhere in the world. Just a computer and an internet connection are needed. Any work done on the system stays on the system until removed by its owner.

Contact Leo Lefebvre at leo@tug.ca to get started.
