TUG Smarter Planet Think Tank

YOU have it in YOUR POWER to make the world BETTER — to make the world SMARTER!

Join fellow TUG members for this exciting interactive event on the topic of Smarter Planet hosted by IBM. Graham Churchill from the IBM Canada WebSphere team will review IBM’s Smart Planet agenda and relate how organizations all over the world, and right here in Canada, are actively applying the Smarter Planet principles to achieve improved outcomes.

IBM’s Smarter Planet initiative addresses four major focus areas across a range of industries:
(1) Dynamic Infrastructure,
(2) New Intelligence,
(3) Green & Beyond, and
(4) Smart Work.

At this TUG meeting, we will explain these themes in detail, providing examples of where and how they are being applied to solve some of the world's most pressing problems. After reviewing the concepts, TUG attendees will have the chance to show off their owns smarts as we split into Think Tank teams for a friendly rivalry to see who can come up with the best Smart Planet ideas for Toronto, for Canada, or even for your own company.

This event is sure to be not only fun and engaging but also a great way to get to know your fellow TUG members. Get your ideas ready. You don’t want to miss this event Register now at www.tug.ca/SmarterPlanet/reg_planet.php!

Project Leadership Certification Program

New TUG benefit of Membership from IT World Canada

The University of Waterloo is the only top-level institution offering an online certification program in project leadership, which also covers preparing for the updated PMI exams. In cooperation with IT World Canada, Dr. Peter Carr, Professor and Director of the Management of Technology Online Program states, “We think this is not only a strong learning model to pursue, but also essential forfull time workers who will be upgrading their skills in such an essential area as project management with an onus on leadership.” Of note is the fact that this course can also be accessed through the Blackberry Smartphone, which is part of a pilot project undertaken between RIM and the University of Waterloo.

University of Waterloo’s Results
    • Students can study and be more productive in their downtime
    • Valuable course content can be easily shared in a variety of ways
    • Students feel more connected
    • More opportunities for project and team collaboration
    • Professors can gauge what is being viewed in order to improve course content.

With such an exciting delivery option from the university ranked “best overall and innovative” by Maclean’s, TUG recently met with Dr. Peter Carr to discuss securing a discounted rate for TUG members. Lẻo Lefebvre and Vaughn Dragland successfully negotiated a five percent (5) discount on tuition fees for the Certificate Project Leadership Program.

This certificate program features weekly video panel discussions, seasoned industry leaders from all major sectors of the economy, from automotive, financial and construction, to media, government and manufacturing. No other project management course offers in-depth foremost practitioners, providing invaluable leadership insight from the real world.

The whole cost is tuition; no travel or missing work that are requirements in classroom environments. This is a global programme. Students participate from across Canada and internationally, allowing for a global dialogue about managing complex projects.
