ABSTRACTS:
Integrating Node.js and IBM i
One of the best parts of Node.js is that it compliments traditional IBM i programs so well. But it can be difficult to know how to actually integrate your existing RPG, C, and COBOL programs with your new fancy Node.js applications. In this session we will look at different ways of connecting a Node.js application to IBM i resources like programs and Db2 for i. Particular attention will be paid to the various database connectors available to you, including the Node.js ODBC connector. We will conclude with a sample application the leverages Node.js to do cool, modern things while still connecting to and running an RPG program and get data from a Db2 for i table using ODBC. By the end, you should see that integrating Node.js with your other applications couldn't be simpler!
Kafka and IBM i
Apache Kafka touts itself as "an open-source distributed event streaming platform used by thousands of companies for high-performance data pipelines, streaming analytics, data integration, and mission-critical applications." If that doesn't immediately make sense, then come to this talk! Mark has broken down all of the core components of Kafka into simple concepts that we will use to build our knowledge from the ground up. We will not only learn what Kafka is and how it works, but also how we can use it (easily!) on IBM i and with IBM i. We will conclude with a demo that will reinforce all of the learning we have done. By the end, you will feel completely demystified about Kafka and have a strong sense of where it can fit in your overall application strategy.

Press Release
Immediate Release – September 2023
Toronto, Ontario - Shield Advanced Solutions Ltd is excited to announce the release Version 2.0 of their Nagios Monitoring plugin for IBM i - AAG!
Choose AAG to keep an 'eye' on their IBM i. Shield's simple to install, highly functional solution for monitoring your environment. Using the notification options not only reduces operator workload but can also prevent minor issues from becoming major problems. The frequency of some checks requires they perform at the highest level possible; this is something that Version 2.0 has continued to improve.
Says Chris Hird, Shield's Director, "AAG 2.0 provides 128 ready-made checkpoints along with lots of other enhancements in the works. We have converted all our current clients to the new level and the feedback has been very positive, especially for some of the new features. We are constantly improving the product and have a lot of exciting new options in the pipeline that will make the user experience even better."
New features in AAG 2.0 include a new installation wizard for clients who are running Nagios XI - reducing the drama and complexity for IBM i installations. Installation and configuration of a new IBM i system for monitoring now takes far less time than before due to the automated scripts that the wizard provides.
Implementation of graphical views using Grafana has been added to the Shield distribution of Nagios which is proving popular in the user community.
New checks added this release:

A client recently praised AAG, "This is just what we needed! The software does exactly what Shield says it does and provides our support team peace of mind and the ability to be more proactive!"
AAG initially announced in November 2021, is a solution to integrate IBM i into any Nagios monitoring configuration. This plugin has been developed by Shield Advanced Solutions Ltd and provides an exceptional number of data points with the choice of a simplified or detailed view, providing a simple to use overview of your infrastructure's status. AAG is highly scalable with alert distribution via Email and Pushover Notifications.
Shield Advanced Solutions, established in Toronto 1997, has a reputation for simple to install and maintain solutions for the IBM i as well as above and beyond customer support.
